Collection: The battle of Waterloo in 1815.
Description: History buffs will be fascinated by this museum devoted to Waterloo, but also to the famous battle and the great men who turned this location into the stuff of legend. The old tavern and staging post where the Duke of Wellington, commander-in-chief of the allied troops fighting Napoleon, had his headquarters on the 17th and 18th of June, 1815, found new life in accommodating a number of items and testimonials illustrating the terrible battle. It was where the Duke of Wellington wrote the statement announcing victory over Napoleon's army to the British government. With a view to recreating the atmosphere of the period, the British commander's room has been rebuilt, along with the room where his aide-de-camp passed away. The historical and political background of the time is brought to life via etchings, weapons, uniforms and original documents. In a large room at the back of the building, lit maps help follow the various stages of the battle. Yet another section of the museum is devoted to the commune's past, displaying diagrams, maps and archives.
