Collection: General insight into the history of money in Belgium and the rest of the world.
Description: It may have no smell, but it can still boast about having a long history. It has aroused man's passions for thousands of years and accompanies him in his day-to-day activities with only relative loyalty. Housed in the prestigious historical premises of the National Bank of Belgium, this museum invites visitors to follow the money route in an interactive and lively presentation. The "Story of money" exhibition explores every nook and cranny of the world of mint in several major themes. It examines the various missions and activities of the National Bank since its foundation, and also how methods of payment have developed. One of the things you will learn is that the word 'salary' comes from the Latin 'salarium', which referred to the Roman soldiers' pay in salt. The inner workings of financial markets and payment systems are also thoroughly analysed. Using original presentations, the exhibition provides a wide range of clear explanations on the sometimes complex aspects of money. And last but not least, another infinitely rich topic: money as a cultural phenomenon. A museum that's worth at least its weight in gold!
